In a time where everything goes fast, television programs are full of drama and flashy and fast assembly seems to attract the opposite of this entertainment genre. In Norway it is already a big hit: Slow TV.

The Norwegian television producer Thomas Hellum talking in a TEDx Talk about this peaceful television and why people seem to have a need. He and his team began in 2009 with the broadcast of incredibly boring and tedious events, such as a seven-hour train ride, or a 18-hour fishing trip.

In presenting the award winning producer talks about the program he made for the Norwegian television on a five-day cuise. If something is not spectacular and fast, then it is a big cruise ship glides over vast waters. However, the program was a big hit among the Norwegian viewers. People lined the route to wave at the television. Even Queen Sonja left as her palace to wave.

Along the train

Another example is a train ride from Bergen, Norway to Oslo, which was first broadcast in 2009 on Norwegian television and that slow TV for the country really began. It was broadcast on primetime and 1.2 million people actually tuned into the dull images. It was a hit. Hellum talks in his presentation about how people on social media began to talk about their views during the train ride. “It was like they took the train together.” He also explains what a 76-year-old man wrote to him: “I have really enjoyed the best television ever made I keep looking until the train finally stopped just before the end station I got up from my chair to get my luggage.. . I grabbed the curtain rails and realized that I was in my own living room. ”

Crackling log fires

The phenomenon lethargic television seems back to stem from 1963 when Andy Warhol a five-hour film made of a sleeping man named Sleep. Five hours is nothing else to see than the static image of a man sleeping. In New York a few years later the idea was adopted by broadcast burning fireplace on Christmas Eve. Already smuggled here though, because actually went to a run of 17 seconds, which aired for two hours.
