For the first time since ‘Oprah’ Lance Armstrong appeared on television – nrc.nl

For the first time since his doping confessions by Oprah Winfrey, now more than two years ago, former cyclist Lance Armstrong has again given a television interview. To a journalist from the BBC said the 43-year-old American, among other things confess guilt, regret and forgiveness. Yet he would use again as doping.

The BBC has put a part of the video on Youtube. View the full interview at the broadcaster itself or read it here.

He is not indicating the desired answer, Armstrong knows only too well. But as with his confession indicates the man seven times won the Tour de France – and later the results were deleted – that almost the entire platoon was on the banned substances:

“It’s a difficult question, and my answer will not be popular. If I could drive in 2015, then I would not use it, because that is not necessary in my opinion. But if you give me would bring back to 1995, when doping was omnipresent, I would do I do it again. “

Not always fight, only in the course

Still, Armstrong would not have tackled everything the same way, if he would get a second chance to make his career on. He was the man he had changed as a cyclist, he confesses in front of BBC reporter Dan Roan. What bothers him that Lance Armstrong?

“The way he dealt with people, and that he could not stop fighting. It is good to fight in training or in a race. But at a press conference does not make sense to go to the fight. I used to sit here with you quarrel, I had entered the fight. “

A scapegoat for all the wrongs in cycling

It is not the first time that Armstrong media reacts after much discussed interview with Oprah Winfrey in early 2013. He late 2013 gave a big interview to the cycling website Cyclingnews. An appearance on TV – let alone so long – came after “The Confession” But no longer.

Easily the period after the interview was not, so now recognizes Armstrong told the BBC. In his mind, the cyclist was not only a doping sinner, but he was brought up as a scapegoat for everything that was wrong in cycling. Because doping investigation and lawsuits, all focused on him.

“Lance Armstrong was not the biggest cheater in the history of the sport. And US Postal [his team at the time, NRC] did not have the most sophisticated doping program ever. You can not say in light of what you know all about East Germany, West Germany, the Russians and other sporting competitions. “

Time for forgiveness?

Is it time to forgive his Lance Armstrong doping? Like so many of the riders with whom he then drove more or less forgiven? The American self-doubt when he gives the answer:

“That’s not really fair. Look, I’m not going to lie to you. Speaking for myself, I would say yes, that time is approaching. But I am, and my word does not count anymore. What matters is the opinion of the people on the street “
