opinion Today is exactly 25 years since RTL first came in Dutch living rooms under the name RTL Véronique. TV expert Bert van der Veer describes what – according to him – a quarter century of commercial television has brought us.

How neatly raked it patriotic media landscape in October 1989 when commercial television was launched, nota bene ruled from a tiny grand duchy which usually only hard driving through it.

For years, no, decades was the monster kept caged by a deep conspiracy of public broadcasters with their related political parties. Until the riot kneveling not. Resulted What was it? There were three networks and who lived on the border have picked some of the Belgian or German along. You have not even three newspapers anyway? Well then.

What had those commercials to offer? Well, pockets full of money, but only to the (sadly: foreign) investors. That alone made commercial television to a dangerous intruder. Everything was feared was true.

So it was 25 years ago, not shown, and really not done that program, especially films, were interrupted by advertising. Get used to anything. Nowadays attaches to the commercial break. It provides time for a mockery to the refrigerator or on the lake that you’ve stopped too long. Those commercials were much more terrible in store. As some already have the ‘hidden persuaders’, the ‘hidden persuaders’ were called. In advertising

Public broadcasters were severely punished if they having knowledge of what already criminalizing ‘surreptitious advertising’ was mentioned. That was called sponsorship. And so it really was not even that, because why would not your child may ask for just about wore jersey as Arnie in Good Times? Hits a search on the Kalverstraat. The worst was perhaps that the presence of television in the living room was even more compelling. Had 20, 30 years ago that the rehabilitation unit of the living room dictated (to the radio, you could sit back, monitor demanded oriented cans), now the offer was so attractive and versatile became clear that the evening could be completely filled with images in all colors.

Shopping
RTL grabbed it – after numerous examples in many countries – to unscrupulous. Children should not ignore, because they can also be demanding. So came Telekids. The more playtime, the more space for groceries.

While public broadcasters the hours before the holy 8 o’clock news filled with anything and everything, RTL introduced the horizontal programming: every working day at the same time the same title. And especially in the evening and even afternoon. The 5 o’clock Show, Prijzenslag, Wheel of Fortune, which GTST later, even the news, you just know what you got and if it worked, and addictive. So much so that research showed that for Wheel of Fortune every night pretty much looked the same people who now really knew how to use it. Washing powder which End quiz. But the end of the family around the steaming stew at the dinner table. Why renewed conflict risked and boring stories heard as Hans van der Togt and Hans Kazan banging on the door?

Yes, RTL and then all the others have the media landscape has changed. It may be called a miracle that proper newsgathering survived the cynical reality of the commercials. Because ultimately it’s pretty annoying that must be broadcast. Through all those expensive programs between commercial breaks

Not changed
But as fascinating as commercial television to see what has changed in society, in family life, it is important to look at what has not changed. We still cherish the collective experience, is still ranked high as a television conversation dust at the coffee machine. Have you seen Waylon at Humberto? Was that fake what Robert ten Brink was doing in Holland’s got talent? Have you seen the new hunk in GTST before?

Television binds people still. And the relationship between the sender and the recipient is not at all worse. Soon start SBS 6 with a talent which only the viewers at home still constitute the jury. And what a bonus it is not like TV shows come and help you if you heavily in the red, your house has become a pigsty or your loved one lives too far away?
And of course, not you, but they helped. But if does not have such neighbors you happy how nice is that it does not? So it may be that commercial television has made people. Richer and happier ultimately concluded All you’ve got to stand for open, of course …
