Wikipedia tells me that a journalist and television producer Martin Heylen ever wrote for this newspaper. I suspect that in drafting it sometimes swears that this is not so. Heylen is indeed an expert. A journalist must of course be able to write and preferably a solid address book bag, but most importantly for the journalistic craft seems a strong dose of wonder. Heylen has that about it.

He is just about the El Sympatico of the program makers. Always curious but not intrusive. Playful yet serious. Rational but still very concerned. We may observe once during the series back to their own country on four, which now expires. I really wanted to go and have a coffee with him. Hopefully he reads the newspaper yet.

“This series has more disconnected than fifty news programs on the same subject, I doubt second to none”, is the opinion of one of the participants, Jean-Marie Dedecker (DM 14/4). As he has. We should therefore show the series in almost all schools. Primary, secondary or higher education: everyone would have something. The refugee crisis which now fills for months pages and programs thanks Heylens documentary gets a concrete face. It is even not about left or right, push backs or open borders. But the people themselves. It is actually permeating all of us.

When viewing is difficult not to cry. What must it have been for the participants, perhaps what everyone is wondering. Naturally, I had to look that little bit more attention to what my colleagues in the program said and did. Dedecker I have seen as I met him during my first term as MP. A colleague with whom to discuss the fine coffee drink. Rock hard, it’s hard to stabbing him right over, but human and warm. Even for those who do not have access to the coffee room of the parliament is now clear.

That other fellow, Zuhal Demir, has I sometimes unpleasantly surprised. We started together in the room and when she still lived in Antwerp, I could occasionally drive it after late meetings. Demirs detachable its manifesto but with expletives and without respect of an unseen coldness. If a politician can not afford humanity. If it is so difficult to understand why people flee countries at war. Through the snow they are seeking a better future. They do what people do: to live healthily and safely pursue a better future for their children

If we Zuhal and I, today both his MP, by the way is also because father Demir and grandfather Calvo indeed. the’ve got a chance here to build a future for their children and grandchildren. That does your party program can not be determined yet, but it would be at least a beginning of some empathy. That empathy was not there. Bold statements, though. In the last episode she gives that to himself. Happy.

In any case, I hope that Flanders will remember more from Back to home country than just these slippages. It’s the best thing television has shown us since long. But it is primarily a call to there even really about, about the refugee crisis. Not only with people who share your beliefs on the issue, but also with someone who looks really quite differently. Ish, Bert, Marguerite, Veroniek, Jean-Marie and Zuhal has already been shown that it can. Merci.
