In addition to his job as a broker does Sjoerd Fleming (38 years) volunteering. Every Saturday he goes out with Ed Fahrer (69 years). This week to see if they are at RTV Utrecht.
Sjoerd Fleming has consciously chosen to do something for someone older. “It touches me that someone in his old age is lonely. In the past, someone might be a very different life, with a wife and children, work and a social network. I think that’s such a painful contrast.
Via Ravelijn Sjoerd makes acquaintance with Ed Fahrer, recently moved to Amersfoort. Ed feels lonely after losing his wife. Both children live abroad and Ed has few social contacts. He also suffering from the effects of a stroke.
During the introduction Ed and Sjoerd appear on anything and everything to be able to talk. Both love reading and history, hiking and lunch at the center. Initially Sjoerd doing volunteer work especially to do something good for someone else. But soon he realizes that he himself takes pleasure in. Sjoerd: “I have a nice click with Ed.”
The life of Ed is by Sjoerd changed for the better. Ed Fahrer ‘Sjoerd means a lot to me. It’s not just a cup of coffee in the city. I look forward to it as it comes, as I used to be looking for a holiday.
