Mr. Robot is mature television about hacking – Engineer

From tonight NPO 3 transmits the American drama series Mr. Robot . The story of a semi-autistic hacker trying to protect humanity from evil corporations, was already a success in the US and is now Dutch public is going to win. The view on technology that the series is refreshing, though some clichés persist.

Mr. Robot , almost from the beginning a different image of computers, hacking and the people who deal with it. The semi-autistic eccentric Elliot works during the day for an internet security company, but in the evening hours, when he stiff state of the morphine, he hacked his way through the Internet, fighting against evil corporations, pedophiles and other malefactors. Elliot comes soon thanks to this nocturnal activity in contact with a hacker collective that fights E Corp, a super company responsible for the death of Elliot’s father. Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), Elliot learns the ropes within the organization that revolves around anonymity of its members.

evil Source

Although the series in style and tone is decidedly paranoid, technology is never the source of evil. It is a tool that can be used for good or for evil purposes. That vision of technology is refreshing for television, in which a premise that computers are scary and hacking is always perilous fixture. The panicky or nerdige way television shows depict ICT, stems from a lack of familiarity with the world and some fear for the future.

Nihilistic dialogue

This is reflected in the supporting roles in Mr. Robot . The title character is a Vietnam veteran like wanderer rather than an old nerd overweight. Elliot himself may have some contact disturbed, he is also cool about and has sex with his handsome drug dealer. Moreover, there is nothing that implies that his computer talent that creates problems. That makes for a nuanced character, even if his nihilistic monologues put some cliché. This may be incidentally as intended, because after the first three episodes yet it is not clear whether the program completely on the side of Elliot and Mr. Robot state.

In the US, the first season of the series a somewhat unexpected hit. Yet it is understandable for a more mature perspective on technology, and more slow and contemplative drama with drawling dialogues, in which Elliot hardly pays attention to what is being said. Prestige Television therefore, with a pulp edge thanks to the sometimes exaggerated Elliot attitude toward the world. That was in the first three episodes, the biggest stumbling block.

The marketing campaign, with a movie poster which big FUCK SOCIETY is written with the head of Elliot above, doing a show for rebellious teenagers suspected. In reality it is a completely different, better show, which first computers and hacking in a serious way you approach and bringing into view.
