Weerpluimen or molehills? – NRC

The year 2016 has not been exemplary from the point of view of the equality of men and women on television. According to the CSA, which was released on Tuesday its annual barometer of diversity, “only 36 % of the people taking the word to the screen are women, while women represent 52 % of the French population.”

The Board relies on the law for real equality between women and men dating 2014, who is overseeing the fair representation of women at the antenna and the fight against stereotypes.

The strings should now count the number of women present, and give “qualitative and quantitative indicators on the representation of women and men in their programs” in the CSA. The conclusion is sad: in spite of such measures, there has been no change since the barometer dating from 2014.

women in secondary roles

the higher Council of The audiovisual stresses and a decrease in the rate of presence of women in magazines and documentaries (32% of those taking the floor are women compared to 34% two years previously) as well as in fiction, (35% compared to 37% in 2014). Women are confined to secondary roles as in the roles of heroines or main roles.

The women, however, are better represented in the entertainment (41% vs. 39%), in information (37% vs. 36%) and in the field of sport (17% compared to 16% in 2014).

A report in march to complete the barometer

To get its results, the CSA was viewed 17 TNT channels (TF1, France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, France Ô, M6, W9, BFM TV, C8, CSTAR, Gulli, iTélé, NRJ 12, NT1, TMC, Issue 23) for two weeks, 17 hours to 23 hours.

The Commission also intends to publish in march “the annual report on the declarations of the channels in terms of women’s representation.” Therefore, the CSA will “remind the strings of their obligations” in terms of parity.
